Connecticut Legislation, Public Act No. 18-69

On May 25, 2018, Public Act No. 18-69, an act concerning health insurance coverage for prosthetic devices, was approved. Prosthetics were previously classified as “durable medical equipment” similarly to canes, walkers and crutches. They were not considered medical necessities. After this bill passed, private insurance companies in Connecticut were required to cover high-tech prosthetics limbs. The law also mandates insurance companies to allow for repairs and replacements. This act would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Connecticut Amputee Network (CAN) founders, Herb Kolodny and Brenda Novak.
